An investigation has begun in Kenya after prominent Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif was shot dead by police in a road block on Sunday.

Police say he was "fatally injured" as a passenger in a moving car after failing to stop.

A 49-year-old man left Pakistan in August after complaining of harassment.

He has been to England and Dubai before traveling to Kenya. Exactly what he did in the East African country is unknown.

On Monday, a journalist in the Pakistani city of Karachi held a street protest against his killing.



Kenya's police watchdog, the Independent Police Oversight Authority (Ipoa), said it had dispatched a rapid response team to the scene of Sunday night's shooting in Kajiado county near the capital Nairobi.

The team will investigate "suspected police killings of Pakistani nationals", Ipoa Chairman Ann Makori told reporters.

A police statement said it regretted the "unfortunate incident".

Pakistani Prime Minister Shebaz Sharif (no relative) tweeted that he was "deeply saddened by the shocking news of the tragic death of journalist Arshad Sharif."

He later said he spoke with Kenyan President William Ruto and called for a "fair and transparent investigation."

Pakistani Information Minister Mariyum Aurangzeb cautioned against speculating about the circumstances of the death.

Sharif's wife Javeria Siddiq said in a short message on her Twitter that she had lost "her friend, husband and my favorite journalist."

Former Prime Minister Khan called for a "proper judicial inquiry" and said he was "shocked" by what he described as a "murder", adding that he had "paid the ultimate price to tell the truth".

Khan was ousted in April after losing a no-confidence vote. Sharif, who had backed Khan, then began complaining that the country's Federal Bureau of Investigation was harassing him and that he was leaving the country.
